Manhattan Pennysaver 1980-1986

On my 25th Birthday, I resigned my Position as Junior Pressman at the NY Times and bought Manhattan Pennysaver. I converted it from the smallest of 5 to the largest of 3 weekly advertising newspapers. This was accomplished by doubling circulation, making it 2 colors and increasing the size from 16 to 56 pages weekly. My distribution system was hiring people to stand at subway stations as people exited from the subway. We were the first utilizing that strategy which put the paper right in people's hands. It was that kind of distribution that made us outstanding for advertising results. I quadrupled the classifieds, added the TV guide to make it a week-long keeper and added weekly contests where I gave away gift certificates to readers to the ADVERTISER of their choice. The advertisers enjoyed getting money back and seeing their advertising dollars work. I decided to try new strategies including the first upside down advertisement and the first reverse print ad. We expanded by starting a printing company where we printed and distributed flyers for businesses in New York City as well as providing them with advertising promotional items.
